Is this the kind of view you find yourself dreaming of during those long, gray and cold winter days? You’re not alone. This year, put some winter money-saving tips into action so that you can make a summer trip a reality! Winter is a great time to save so that your summer vacation can be something to remember.

Winter money-saving tips wouldn’t be complete without a look at the biggest budget-stealer in our homes–our heating costs. You can’t freeze to death in your own home, but you don’t have to. There are some great ways to save on heating costs while still feeling comfortable. Look at it this way, any money you can save on heating costs is money you can add to your summer trip savings.

Here are some winter money-saving tips for your home:

  • Look for drafts! It might sound simple, but that’s because it is. Many of us have drafts around windows and doors that we haven’t bothered to seal up. Sealing them up can actually save you quite a bit over the winter. Caulk around windows, and add a sweep to the bottom of doors where cold air seeps underneath.
  • Try lowering your thermostat. Do you run it at 72 even while you’re away? Try setting it at 65 when you’re at work, and 69 when you’re home. That’s a lot of savings!
  • Replace your furnace filter more often. Your furnace will run much more efficiently, and that adds up to some winter money savings you can apply toward your summer trips.

Keep a jar or piggy bank just for all your spare change. Designate a day of the week to empty all your spare change into your jar, and then don’t touch it. At the end of the winter, you could have enough to pay for a few meals out during your summer vacation.

Open a dedicated savings account just for your summer trips, then decide on an “extra” amount to contribute to it during the winter. If you use direct deposit, that money can go straight to savings before you even see it. Now you just have to leave it alone until it’s time to pay for your summer trip.

Winter is a good time to de-junk around the house. Resolve to do this, and then sell-off the stuff that’s just cluttering your space. Any money you make goes directly to your winter money savings account for your next trip.

Try any or all of these winter money savings tips and you’ll be set for your summer trip!
