Ways To Save Money On Gardening
First, do your research! When planning out a garden, visit garden shows and classes and talk to master gardeners to learn as much as you can. Learn about the plants you want to grow, and the best ways to grow them. You don’t want a plant purchase to turn into a wasted purchase.
Before you buy plants and garden supplies, comparison shop. The closest nursery may not be the most economical choice. You may find the best prices at a home & garden store a little further away. It pays to know where to go first.
If it’s the first garden you’ve planted, take the time to choose the best location in your yard. Make sure it gets at least 6 hours of sun per day and has good access to water. Plenty of sun and enough water go a long way to making your investment pay off. You’d be surprised how many people have had a lackluster garden because they didn’t plan for these two things!
If you’re ready for a little challenge and want to save even more, plant a garden from seed instead of purchasing plants.
If you do start your own seeds, make cheap and earth-friendly seed-starting pots out of newspaper. This really works well and costs much less than buying a bunch of little pots for your seeds. HGTV has a tutorial for this.
After a successful harvest, save some seeds from your produce to start next year’s garden. This saves quite a bit of money over buying new seed packets each year!

When starting a flower garden, choose perennials that will come back year after year. That way, the investment is up front, but the enjoyment continues long afterwards.
