How to Find Money Owed to You by the Government

December 28, 2017 by Hailey Harris Leave a Comment

Do you find yourself with a little too much month leftover at the end of the money? Are you running a bit short on rich uncles to leave you their millions? Do you just feel a need to get what’s coming to you? Well, you’re in luck, because it just so happens that the government might owe you some money. So if you’re keen on pleasant surprises and don’t mind taking a few steps, you can discover what money might be waiting for you right now.

1. Search Your State

Every state should have some kind of online resource where you can search your name for unclaimed property. There is no central source for this, so if you’ve lived in 3 different states, you’ll need to conduct 3 separate searches.

2. Search for Unclaimed Tax Refunds

Believe it or not, sometimes a tax refund never makes it to you for any number of reasons. If you’re unsure you’ve received everything you’re entitled to, it’s worth looking into. You might not be able to finance that trip to Italy, but you could enjoy dinner and a movie.

3. Look Up Your Banks

You’ll also want to check for unclaimed funds that may have resulted from any failed banks or credit unions you’ve done business with in the past. If they were unable to reach you, you could have money waiting.

4. See if You Have Unclaimed Wages

If you think you might be owed some back wages from a past employer, search the Wage and Hour Division database and see if your name is on their list. Unclaimed wages? Sounds like a reason to party!

5. Beware of Scammers

When you start searching the internet to find unclaimed money, you’ll likely come across a lot of scams. These people are looking to get your information, or charge you a fee to send you your unclaimed money. Don’t fall for it! You should never have to pay a fee to claim what’s rightfully yours. Legitimate government agencies will also never call you about unclaimed property, so if you get one of these calls, hang up and report it to the FTC.
