How do you feel about the tiny home trend? It’s true there are compromises you must make if you decide to start living small. But it’s also true that there are some great benefits to be gained. Let’s talk about how to save money by living small! You just might decide to make the switch.

Whether your home is a tiny home or a small one, there are benefits to living in one over living in a large home. Your grandparents probably knew this already! Surprisingly, the average size of a home in the U.S. in 1950 was just 980 square feet. Nearly 20 years later, the average size of a U.S. home had increased to about 1600 square feet. Now since 2010, that size has climbed to more than 2400 square feet. Despite the rise in home size, there are many who are realizing the benefits of choosing a much smaller home.

So how does living small equal saving big? In lots of ways, actually. Let’s just hit on the bigger ones.

  • This goes without saying, but a smaller home is much more energy-efficient than a large home. It takes less money to heat and cool, and also takes less energy to live in. Living small equates to saving big in energy bills.
  • If you are someone who loves feeling cozy and intimate, you definitely get that much easier by living in a small home. Large homes lack that cozy feeling just by virtue of space. Live cozy by living small. It just might be right up your alley!
  • Hate all the stuff you accumulate without realizing it? Living small and saving big happens easily when you simply don’t have the space to keep acquiring stuff. And all the stuff we acquire isn’t necessarily stuff we need. Many tiny home owners say they are much happier living with less stuff.
  • A smaller home definitely means less money spent in upkeep, cleaning, and maintenance.
